Racing for Smiles of the Northwest "Steps Up" to Help Kids at St. Luke's Hospital
With the last event at ASA sanctioned Meridian Speedway just hours away, RFSNW made another giant step to giving kids a smile. After some phone calls made by Leann Reed, the V.P., RFSNW was allowed to go to the pediatric ward at St. Luke's Hospital. Ron Hayes, president of RFSNW, made a couple of phone calls and was able to get two of Meridian Speedway's up and comers to join him. Tyler Monroe and Brandon Johnson were more than happy to help. They got to the fourth floor, while waiting for their escort, and met a few kids that had heard that "racecar drivers" were coming to see them. After getting pictures and wearing their helmets for the "full effect" they were headed back to their rooms. The group met up with Amy, who is the child life specialist, at St. Luke's Hospital. The tour started in the Oncology unit. The group's first visit was with 12-year-old Matt, who received pictures from all three drivers, and then he asked as many questions as they could answer for him. They then met up with 5-year-old Amy Lynne. She had never seen a racecar or drivers before. She was very happy to talk to them, get their photos, and get her picture taken with them. The tour ended in the activities room. Several children received photos and autographs before they drivers had to be on their way. Over the winter months RFSNW will start visits at St. Luke's more frequently. Any drivers interested in giving some smiles to children can contact Ron Hayes.
