The above is a line from a James Bond movie starring Pierce Brosnon but it was one of the first things I thought of after watching the Super Stock race from the infield Saturday night. I took a series of photos of the actions I have commented on. It was too dark to print and share the said photos but I can see the details that back up my comments.
Rick Baldwin took home the memorial trophy on Saturday night, Aug. 9th. After an emotional wreck that took out Gale Carter and sent him to the back of the lead lap it looked like Phyllip Zubizareta won the race by a fender just inside of Baldwin but after the race Zubizareta was penalized for an improper last turn of the last lap pass. It looked to me that he nosed his way inside and pushed Baldwin up and was possibly under the white line also. I enjoy photographing Phyllip, he is photogenic, but in my opinion Baldwin deserved the win.
Actually Carter deserved the win. As I saw it (and anyone with posting priveleges on this website is welcome to comment) with about five laps to go he was bumped from behind on turn one and was forced loose and slid up the track but not far enough for a car behind to pass. But the car behind kept at it and kept Carter loose so he could not gather it up. The heartbreaking spin-out eventually happened a half lap later with the result being Dennis Brodigan and Carter both sent to the back at the restart.
Brodigan is a talented driver but this is the second time this season he has spun the leader in a bid for the win. Both times he was sent to the back. Both times he would have finished the race in a better position if he had driven less with his front bumper and more with his ability. And here is the part that makes many fans and drivers to wonder, both times it was Carter that he spun. Some people think that he has an agenda and Carter is his target. I don't know about that but I overheard someone say in the Brodigan pit stall after the races last night "every track needs a bad boy". My opinion is not really, no, I am sure they don't.
I would love to hear your comments.
