Street Stocks race 50 laps Saturday at Meridian

MERIDIAN, Idaho — The race car drivers aren’t the only ones who will be rushing for glory Saturday night at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.

The first big race of the season is on tap with the College of Western Idaho Professional Truck Driving School Street Stocks 50-lap feature. Melissa Scott of Nampa, Idaho, has the early lead in the series.

But children who register when they get to the track will have the opportunity to run the Penny Gold Rush. The top children in the scramble for pennies will win prizes.

Gates open at 4 p.m., racing starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7.50 for senior citizens and military personnel with ID, $6 for children ages 7-11 and free for children 6 and younger.

In addition to the Street Stocks, the ESI Express ASA Modifieds will take to the quarter-mile oval for their first double main event of the season. The Meridian Modifieds drivers, such as points leader Shelby Stroebel of Nampa, Idaho, are chasing points in the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship again this season. Last year, Tom Hill of Eagle, Idaho, finished fourth in the West Region standings for the title. The national champion earns a test ride with Joe Gibbs Racing.

The Thunderdogs also make their 2010 debut Saturday.

Nampa drivers Danny Canington and Art Heath try to settle their early-season tiebreaker at the top of the Tates Hornets standings and defending champion Johnny Giesler of Meridian goes for season win No. 2 in the exciting Pepsi Sprintcars.
