Idaho State Hillclimb Series Kicks off Next Weekend

NEW PLYMOUTH, Idaho – Idaho’s largest motorcycle event, and the only pro motorcycle hillclimb in the Northwest, the 12,000-attendee Big Nasty, has created a lot of interest in motorcycle hillclimbing in the Northwest, and so two, new, additional motorcycle hillclimbs have been added. “The World’s Steepest Hillclimb” will take place on May 22-23, and will be held about 1 mile past the Big Nasty Hillclimb site, off of Big Willow Creek Road, four miles north of New Plymouth, Idaho, and 11 miles east of Ontario, Oregon. Together, the May 22-23 World’s Steepest, the September 17-19 Big Nasty, and the October 9-10 Screamer hillclimbs will make up the 2010 Idaho State Hillclimb Series.

The World’s Steepest Hillclimb, will take place on a steep, 400-foot hill. Saturday’s competition will feature stock motorcycles competing for trophies, starting at 9am and running until about 3pm. Sunday’s program will also begin at 9am and will run classes for specially-modified hillclimbing motorcycles. Although this is not an NAHA (North American Hillclimb Association) national-series pro event, like the Big Nasty, Sunday’s program will feature some professional riders competing on a variety of equipment, including some highly-modified, 200-horsepower bikes that run on exotic fuels such as nitro-methane and nitrous-oxide, and use rear paddle wheels covered with metal chains and bolts. The event will attract competitors from across Idaho, and some top riders from California and Utah, including Utah riders Jason Smith, Dave Ghizzone, and Colby Peck, and Boise’s Pete Treadwell.

Food and beverages will be available at the event, and the spectator area is a comfortable, grassy hayfield right at the base of the hill. Tickets are available at the gate, and are $8 per day for adults and $5 per day for seniors over 65 and military members. Children, ages 6-12, are $3 per day, and kids 5-under are free.
