By Brian Calkins
Those two names are famous among race fans in Idaho but these two guys are not the Brian Scott and John Dillon locals are familiar with. In certain racing circles they are famous just not famous for racing in circles. No left turn only and no door to door for them, they are teammates in one of North America’s best rally teams, Widget Racing.
In 2008 they won the United States Rally Championship title after completing third at the International Rally New York on November 1, 2008. They also competed in the Idaho Rally taking the top tier of the podium at the rally based in Mountain Home, Idaho. Other rallies were the Gorman Ridge Rally, Prescott Rally, Rally West Virginia and the Sandblast Rally.
In 2008 they used a Subaru WRX STi prepared by race Technik in Mesa Arizona. They used the Subaru through part of 2009 but they also used a classic Datsun 240Z which Idaho’s rally fans can see for the first time at the upcoming Idaho Rally 2010.
Those that attended or volunteered at the Idaho Rally 2009 probably remember what happened to the WRX at that event. At least two teams at the event found out the hard way that Idaho pine trees are harder, or at least tougher, than steel. Brian clipped a tree on the right side just in front of the passenger door and the team was out of commission for the rest of the rally losing all possibility of gaining more points in the event.
John Dillon said that you can tell a good rally driver because if they ever hit a tree they make sure to hit on the navigator’s side. Both the driver, Brian Scott, and the navigator, John Dillon were okay and in good spirits after the accident that claimed the Subaru. Look for them to be one of the strongest teams in the rally this year. Spectators can get a close up look at the cars and teams at the two Super Special Stages to be held at Expo Idaho on July 15 and 17
