Preacher Feature brings faster pastors to Meridian

By Jon Brown
MERIDIAN, Idaho — All sorts of bragging rights are on the line Saturday at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.
While men of faith from around the Treasure Valley hit the pavement for the Preacher Feature to find the Fastor Pastor, full-time racecar drivers take another stab at the bounty for the first Mtn. Dew Winged Sprintcar to break into the 10-second realm on a qualifying lap on the tight, banked quarter-mile.
The prize for the first 10-second lap in Meridian Speedway history has grown to $1,200 with recent $100 donations by Curt Green, Ruth Crow and Don Newman. Anyone can add to the bounty by calling the speedway office at (208) 888-2813.
Other classes on tap Saturday include the ESI Express ASA Modifieds, Mini Stocks at Tates Rents Hornets.
The Preacher Feature gives pastors from valley churches the opportunity to strap into a Hornet racecar and zip around the Meridian track. The winner receives a trophy. All churches involved also were given discount tickets to sell with 50 percent of the proceeds going back to the churches.
Men of faith who have signed up for the challenge include Neil Evans, Middleton Baptist pastor; Mark Finley, a priest at Holy Trinity Charismatic Episcopal Church in Meridian; Will Forrest, the youth pastor at Lakeview Bible Church in Nampa; Tom Katsma, pastor at Valley Life Community Church in Meridian; Kuna Baptist pastor Scott Piper; Lakeview’s senior pastor Mike Rice; Stefanie Schnackenberg, the youth minister at Desert’s Edge Christian Church in Boise; and Boise First Community Center senior pastor Darrel Wiseman.
Children once again will have a chance to take home some hardware in another installment of the Westby’s Bicycle Races for Kids.
Eagle, Idaho’s Tom Hill looks to keep some distance between he and his brother, Jeff of Meridian, Idaho, in the ESI Express ASA Modifieds. Only 56 points separate the Hillbilly Racing teammates with Nampa, Idaho’s Shelby Stroebel sits in third with 584 points, just six behind Jeff.
Tom Hill is ranked second in the West Region standings for the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship. He is less than a quarter-point behind Ron Daniel from Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino, Calif. When the West and East Region standings are combined to create national rankings, Hill sits in third place, a fraction of a point behind Jeremy Miller from Madison International Speedway in Wisconsin’s state capital.
While the Hill brothers battle it out in the ASA Modifieds, Eddie Ables of Middleton, Idaho, and Nampa’s Dell Scott continue to jockey for position in the Mini Stocks.
Ables has the points lead — this week. He holds a 26-point edge over Scott, who is the husband of College of Western Idaho Professional Truck Driving School Street Stocks series leader Melissa Scott.
Nampa’s Art Heath retains the Tates Rents Hornets series lead, but has a strong challenge from fellow Nampan David Tankersley. Heath is 42 points ahead.
Admission is $10 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens, $6 for children ages 7-11 and free for ages 6 and younger. Fans can avoid the long lines at the ticket booths by purchasing admission in advance at any of the 14 participating NAPA Auto Parts stores in the Treasure Valley.
Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6:30 p.m.
