Bill Crow Memorial crowns busy night at Meridian

By Jon Brown
MERIDIAN, Idaho — Former track promoter Bill Crow will be honored Saturday night with the 35th running of the Bill Crow Memorial 50 for the NAPA Latemodel Sportsman class at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.
The Crow Memorial, which was postponed by rain during the Memorial Day weekend, highlights a racing card that includes a fun-filled Outhouse Grand Prix as well as another appearance by the touring Intermountain Vintage Sprintcars. The Project Filter Pro-4s, Domino’s Pizza Legends and Jr. Stingers also are scheduled to hit the paved quarter-mile oval.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and military personnel with ID, $6 for children 7-11, and children 6 and younger get in free. Fans can skip the lines at the admission gate by purchasing tickets in advance at 17 Treasure Valley NAPA Auto Parts locations.

Meridian, Idaho, driver John Nesmith straps in and goes in search of his fourth consecutive championship in the Bill Crow Memorial. Since 1995, Nesmith has won a record five of the classics named for the grandfather of current Meridian managing partner Adam Nelson. Crow was father-in-law to former Meridian promoter LeeRoy Nelson.
Crow died in 1975 at the age of 50.
Western Idaho Racing Association Hall of Famer Steve Mason won the inaugural Crow race in 1976. It was the first of his three winning runs in the race. He also claimed the checkered flag in back-to-back years (1982-83).
The Crow Memorial has been a launching pad for WIRA Hall-of-Fame careers. In addition to Mason, other Hall members who have won include Kenny Bowers (1977 and 1978), Jerry Bowers (1979 and 1980), Larry Bowers (1981), John Dillon (1986) and Sean Miller (1994).
Emmett, Idaho’s Dan Buckley will be one of the drivers providing resistance to Nesmith’s march to No. 6. Buckley holds the track qualifying record for Latemodel Sportsman and currently sits atop the season standings in the series.
In the Pro-4s, WIRA Hall-of-Famer Kenny Chandler Jr. of Boise goes for his second consecutive main event victory and more cushion in the series standings. Chandler dominated the Project Filter Pro-4 All-Star Challenge on July 10 to win the second annual showcase.
The Domino’s Pizza Legends season continues with Camron Madsen of Boise leading the charge. Another class worth watching is the Jr. Stingers, the entry class for drivers ages 11-14. At least two teenage drivers have made the jump to the Tates Rents Hornets division in recent weeks.
The Intermountain Vintage Sprintcars, a series owned by track co-operator Don Newman, makes another appearance. The first race of the year at Meridian on July 4 was more than just a parade of classic open-wheelers as Dan Lyons raced hard to edge Kelly Newman for the hardware.
