MERIDIAN, Idaho — With two race nights left for the Mtn. Dew Winged Sprints, time is running out for a driver to claim the bounty for posting a 10-second qualifying lap at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.
The next chance comes Saturday during Racing for a Reason Night at the paved quarter-mile oval. The bounty increased to $1,300 on Wednesday when Hoosier Tire kicked in the latest $100.
The Boise Special Olympics Lions Club benefits from discount ticket sales for Saturday’s races. Fans can pick up general admission tickets from the club for $8. That’s $2 off the face value, and half of the proceeds goes to the club. Call (208) 323-0482, ext. 14 or (208) 724-1717 for more information on how to get the discount tickets.
Admission at the gate is $10 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and military personnel with ID, $6 for children ages 7-11 and free for children 6-and-younger.
Pick up advance tickets at participating Treasure Valley NAPA Auto Parts stores and save time waiting in line Saturday night. Ask for “Speedway” tickets at one of the 17 participating locations.
Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6:30 p.m.
For more information, visit the speedway’s Web site or call (208) 888-2813.
In addition to the Winged Sprints, the ESI Express ASA Modifieds drivers continue to chase a series championship as well as the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oils ASA Member Track National Championship, the prize for which is a tour of the Joe Gibbs Racing garage and a test ride with the team.
Defending Meridian series champ Tom Hill of Eagle, Idaho, continues near the top of the West Region standings in the national title chase. He’s second with an index of 3.6288. According to the latest standings on Speednetdirect.com, which counts action through Aug. 14, Hill is less than .22 of a point behind West leader Brian Wordelman of Rocky Mountain Raceways in Utah. The national leader is East Region top dog Rodney Cook of Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, N.C., with a 4.2693 index. Hill is fourth nationally.
Closer to home, Hill has a battle on his hands with Nampa, Idaho’s Shelby Stroebel. Stroebel has crept to within 20 points of the defending champ with four main events left, including a double feature on the last Modifieds night of the year on Sept. 17.
Other classes running Saturday include the College of Western Idaho Professional Truck Driving School Street Stocks, the Tates Rents Hornets and the unpredictable Thunder Dogs.
With a cool night forecast, Winged Sprint racers such as series leader Mike Murgoitio of Meridian, Idaho, 2009 points king Chris Ratterree of Nampa and Middleton, Idaho’s Sierra Jackson may have to push their machines to find the grip necessary to produce a record time. Saturday’s forecast calls for a high of 74 degrees, which means Mother Nature won’t pump any extra heat into the racing surface to help the drivers.
Jackson, who is third in the Mtn. Dew Winged Sprint series points, has come the closest to breaking the 10-second barrier among home-track racers. She set the house record at 11.426 seconds on the open-wheel opening night of April 24.
Roseburg, Ore.’s Andy Alberding has the fastest winged sprint qualifying lap on the new configuration. He zipped around in 11.157 seconds during the second night of the ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association show during the June 4-5 96.1 BOB FM Diamond Cup presented by Hendrickson’s Fine Jewelers.
The final Mtn. Dew Winged Sprintcar show is Sunday, Sept. 5 during the Tates Rents Fan Appreciation Night.
