Wey shows the way to the Idaho Supercross hardware twice in one weekend at Meridian Speedway’s dirt covered infield.
MERIDIAN, Idaho – Nick Wey travelled from Michigan to school some of the nation’s top riders at the inaugural Idaho Supercross. As the winner of the main events on both Friday and Saturday nights Wey not only has the prestige of winning the inaugural event in the record books but also takes home the lion’s share of the $15,000 pro purse, which should go a long way towards travel expenses.
Boise’s own Ben Evans, who had done very well in Idaho Supercross amateur events leading up to this past weekend’s Pro races finished second in round one on Friday and briefly had the lead during Saturday’s main started to fall back about halfway through when Wey passed for the lead. Wey had been in second for a couple of laps and had to first overcome Evans’ sizeable lead before finding the spot for an inside pass on one of the many corners in the tight race track. Jason Anderson of Bernalillo, New Mexico riding a Suzuki took third during the fifth lap of the race and stayed there behind Evans until on the last lap Evans had a mishap and lost his chain putting him out of commission and contention for the lead.
The final across the finish line was Wey with Anderson and Chris Howell of Spokane, Washington all on the podium.
With two days of pro supercross action on the books Treasure Valley Idaho has seldom had an event with as much prestige as the inaugural Idaho Supercross at Meridian Speedway. Siebler Racing Promotions and On The Edge Racing produced a series of events that started with a dream by Cole Siebler and culminated with several thousand cubic yards of dirt being trucked in to the infield at Meridian Speedway and over 26 professional motocross riders travelling to the famed short track to compete on dirt. Dirt racing has not been the norm at Meridian Speedway since the circle track was converted to asphalt about 50 years ago but with what will be an annual event racing on dirt will soon be a normal thing again at the downtown Meridian racing icon.
At the start of the final race of the pro weekend 20 riders lined up at the gate. When the gate dropped the roar of the engines was not as great as 20 or so alcohol burning sprint cars but the intensity of the competition was at least equal. As the riders sprinted to the first left hand turn it was extremely important to be the first to the start/finish line for two reasons, one was the ‘hole shot” award and the other is because the leader at the start has the best chance to hold on through the remaining 12 laps to take the checkered flag. With only room for maybe four or five riders abreast, and sometimes only two, the first turn is often the fortune teller for the rest of the race.
Next year it is hoped by promoters, fans and of course the riders that the event will be even bigger. Go to wwwidahosupercross.com or find Idaho Supercross on facebook for more information and to keep up with events for next year.
The next event at Meridian Speedway will be the Enduro 250. Gates open at 4 PM and the racing starts at 6. Go to www.meridianspeedwayonline.com or call the speedway at 888-2813 for more information.
